Wanted Maoist Couple Carrying Combined Rs 7 Lakh Bounty Surrenders to Kolkata Police
A Maoist couple carrying a combined cash reward of Rs 7 lakh has formally surrendered before the Kolkata Police, laying down arms under the state's rehabilitation policy.

According to senior police officials, the duo surrendered under the state government's comprehensive surrender-and-rehabilitation framework. The couple had reportedly been active across forested corridors spanning neighboring interstate borders and was wanted in connection with multiple subversive activities and insurgent operations.
Significant Setback to Insurgent Network
Security establishment sources indicated that the husband carried an individual cash reward of Rs 4 lakh, while his wife carried a bounty of Rs 3 lakh declared by regional law enforcement agencies. Both individuals had evaded capture across multiple jurisdictions before deciding to abandon armed militancy and join the mainstream.
"The surrender marks a substantial blow to underground extremist logistics and recruitment in the region," a senior counter-terror official said. "Sustained intelligence pressure, combined with progressive state rehabilitation packages, continues to persuade underground operatives that violent insurgency offers no sustainable future."
During formal questioning, the surrendered cadres reportedly cited growing ideological disillusionment, internal operational frictions, and strict counter-insurgency tracking as key catalysts for their decision to give up arms.
Intelligence Debriefing and Rehabilitation
Following standard operating protocols, the couple is undergoing detailed intelligence debriefing by specialized state counter-terror units. Investigators aim to gather critical operational insights into remaining hideouts, logistical supply chains, weapon caches, and sleeper networks operating in interstate border zones.
Under West Bengal's active surrender-cum-rehabilitation policy, the former operatives will be eligible for financial incentives, state-sponsored housing assistance, vocational training, and legal assistance in transitioning back into civilian life, subject to judicial protocols and the review of existing pending cases.
Broader Security Context
Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) across eastern India, once dominant throughout the Jangalmahal belt and adjoining zones of Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha, has experienced a steep decline over the past decade. Intensive central and state security operations, rural infrastructure expansion, and responsive rehabilitation schemes have severely constricted insurgent strongholds.
Police officials affirmed that legal processes governing surrendered militants are underway and that further procedural verifications are being conducted alongside neighboring state police counterparts.
